Is the Monaco Grand Prix Dead?

If you are an F1 fan, then there are certain races on the ever-expanding calendar that stand out as the greats. Be it Silverstone, Monza, or Spa - to name a few - not many come close to the history and draw of Monaco. But what is it that makes this such a special date on the calendar, and is this the final chapter for the famous street circuit?

Arriving in Monaco on Grand Prix weekend is a spectacle in itself. The airport is like a car park of Private Jets (or PJ’s), and the actual car park is like the doors have opened to a never-before-seen collection of rare artifacts and modern works of art. But most impressive of all is the harbor, where we were fortunate enough to spend the weekend with Impulse F1. If you have ever watched the race, you will have an idea of how special the harbor is. Placed mere meters from the track, it has to be one of the most unique viewing points to watch any race throughout the season.

The atmosphere is explosive. From first-timers to veterans, the passion for motorsport is undeniable and contagious, although the usual sea of supportive team uniforms is somewhat reduced to make way for a certain level of collective style that only Monaco can offer. Everywhere you look, there are incredible watches - a particular standout being the Tiffany dial Patek Philippe that made its way onto our boat on race day - making one thing clear: this is a place for the modern collector.

As first-timers, we were not sure what to expect from the race. There is an argument to be had whether it is actually better to watch Grand Prix races from home, but once you have been exposed to the noise and speed of an F1 car in the flesh, it’s hard to agree that there is any better way to watch it. The race started with Max Verstappen on pole with Fernando Alonso close in his mirrors, which, in the time after qualifying, led everyone to speculate if we would see contact on the first lap and an incredibly eventful race with the remaining cars scrapping for first position. That wasn’t the case, and the race ended in Monaco style with the first three in qualifying order. We were, however, treated to rain in the final third of the race, causing trips to the wall for some drivers as they misjudged the quantity of water on the track before changing to wet tires.

Over the weekend, there was lots of talk about the renewal of the contract for Monaco to host a Grand Prix weekend. Every other conversation contained "Will they do the Monaco Grand Prix after 2025?" or "Could this be the last Monaco Grand Prix?" And there are many reasons why there might be doubt, one of the main ones being a question of whether it is entertaining enough. In this new era of F1 under Liberty, there is a new high priority of entertainment, and with a new audience that has been treated to a highlight reel of F1 drama from 'Drive to Survive,' it becomes difficult to retain viewership if the races are boring, which is especially true for Monaco where 9 times out of 10, drivers will finish where they qualify unless something catastrophic happens, like unpredictable weather or a terrible strategy call. But is it enough to remove one of the most famous spectacles of motorsport over the fact that racing action seldom comes? Our opinion is absolutely NOT. After watching the Grand Prix this weekend, it is clear that the love of the track and its history from the fans is more present than ever, a true display of passion that would be an incredible shame to lose.
