The New MoonSwatch Mission To MoonShine Gold has landed

Watch collectors, get ready to "Swatch this space" as someone who is a huge fan and collector of Omega Speedmasters, I was pleasantly surprised when Swatch released their Bioceramic MoonSwatch. This watch broke records and captured the attention of not just the watch community, but the entire collector community as people formed queues around Swatch stores globally in a frenzy for the new watch, reminiscent of a Supreme drop.

But Swatch isn't finished yet. After two full days of anticipation, they have released a new MoonSwatch called "Mission to Moonshine Gold". At first, we speculated and predicted what this watch would look like, but it turns out to be a riff on the original MoonSwatch with a golden twist. The chronograph seconds hand is coated with Omega Moonshine gold made of recycled gold from the Swatch Group's own certified refinery. Each golden seconds hand was produced under a full moon in February and comes with a special certificate stating that fact upon purchase. The Moonshine coating affects the price of the new MoonSwatch very slightly.

This watch cannot be purchased online, just like the original MoonSwatch. And it is only available for purchase today, March 7, 2023, in London, Milan, Tokyo, and Zurich. Swatch chose these cities because of their association with gold.

Although this watch feels like a teaser, it’s interesting that Swatch put a note in their announcement to stay tuned, possibly for another event like this in the future – possibly under another full moon. This hyper-limited release means that many folks won't be able to purchase these watches purely by virtue of the fact that they don't live in or near the selected cities. Whether we'll see crowds equal to last year's madness in those select cities remains to be seen.

If you do manage to get your hands on this watch, you can expect to get the same Mission to the Moon watch that you know, with a grey Bioceramic case, but with that shiny Moonshine Gold chrono hand sparkling back at you. It's a premium of about £/$25 over the original price, but worth it for modern collectors who want to add this limited-edition watch to their collection.
