Kills Bugs Fast. Up to 181mph, to be exact. Zero to sixty in just over four heartbeats. 400 horses. Liquid all-wheel drive. It’s the Nine Eleven Turbo. Seriously bad news for the insect world.

1995 turned out to be quite an iconic year for the story and history of the 911. Porsche decided to say farewell to a generation of air-cooled cars and start on a journey to a liquid-cooled future. That made the 993 the last of its kind and in my opinion, makes, the model internally designated, 993 a staple in any modern collection. 

Turbocharged 911s were quite often the reason for Porsche's success in motorsport during the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s with many class and outright victories at famous events such as Le Mans and Daytona 24 hours so this car had a lot to live up to.

The (at the time) new 911 brought with it over a second from 0-60 and an extra 10mph to the top speed over its predecessor. This faster car was 80% different from the 964 and was designed from the ground up, including the engine which on the Turbo model meant the 3.6L had twin-turbochargers that develop 408hp. To help put that power down, the 993 was offered with a refined AWD (all-wheel drive) system - the same system used on the halo car of the time the 959 - and not only did it do its job at putting the power to the road, but it also made the incredibly capable in the corners.

Fast forward to today and driving this car doesn’t feel dated in any way. From the second you turn the key you know that you are in one of the most era-defining Porsches ever created. It’s powerful, precise, and perfectly proportioned. The interior feels familiar but not old and the iconic five-dial layout (which quite easily shows 3 figures) and slim sports seats are comfortable. There is no denying this car is near perfection. With sensible mileage examples now reaching way over £150,000 ($200,000) and even its closest brother (the 4s) are now fetching over £100,000 ($132,000).

It’s clear that the 993’s status is recognised within the Modern Collector world and not only that, are introducing a new era of collectors into the fold. Personally, this was the 911 that was on my wall as a kid. I remember the launch and seeing it for the first time just in pure awe of it not even knowing any of the details that made it so great.
